Gossip
This is an "amen" or "ouch" writing so reader beware.
Romans chapter 1
What a perfect, yet sobering, picture of the world we live in today!
Paul opens the chapter with "wicked people who suppress the truth". Sound familiar?
This chapter gives a list of things that are vile and wicked. You cannot read this chapter and condone certain life styles.
However, I find it poignant that the last item cited, after all the "big" sins, is GOSSIP. This shows us how seriously God takes the sin of gossip. He knows that gossip will destroy individuals and has the potential to destroy a church.
How is gossip disguised?
Venting, sharing, concern, speculating and, yes, even prayer requests can be gossip. (i.e. Pray for John Doe. I think he's drinking again.)
Think before you speak:
T - Is it true? Completely true? (I say all the time, "If you quote me quote me verbatim or don't quote me at all.) Don't make things bigger than they are. Don't be a resident of Mayberry
H - Is it helpful? Is it edifying and encouraging?
I - Is it inspiring? Will it lift up or tear down?
N - Is it necessary? Do you NEED to say it? It might be something true and wonderful. But is it someone else's good news?
K - Is it kind? Would you like it said about you?
The next time Satan tempts you to gossip read this chapter. Do you really want to be guilty of a sin that God equates to sexual perversion and murder?
Wow! Lord, put a watch over my lips!
Be blessed!
