How to Study the Word

Bible study is essential to being born-again. How can you survive without eating? How can you have a relationship with someone if you never allow them to speak?

Recently, an individual asked me, "How do you get so much out of the Bible?" She went on to say that she was ashamed to admit that she had been saved a number of years yet had no idea how to study the Word.

"How can they know, unless they are taught?" Romans 10:13

To learn anything we have to do the triple A:

Admit, Ask, Apply.

ADMIT you don't know something. For most people, that's the hard part. I am an odd one in that I have never had a hard time admitting I didn't know something...I have always been a sponge for knowledge!

ASK someone who does know. This is chiefly how I learned music; by asking people who knew more than I...and I am still asking!

APPLY what they tell you.

So this is for that sweet sister, and anyone else who needs it.

How To Study the Bible

For new coverts or those new to studying the Word:

Equip yourself with a translation you can understand. I don't get hung up on the fact that some translation contain small errors. You can concern yourself about that later, as you grow in knowledge.

Get a journal. Ladies, beautiful journals can be purchased at Ollie's for $4. A spiral notebook will do just as well. You need a good pen or mechanical pencil and BIBLE highlighters. Regular highlighters will bleed through the thin pages. Colored pens or pencils for underlining will do just as well.

You need a quiet spot and a Do Not Disturb sign.

Now that you are equipped you are ready to dig into the Word! Begin your journey by reading the following books in this order.

1)1st, 2nd and 3rd John; they are near the end of the Bible...just before The Revelation. These books will give you insight into the LOVE of God for you.

2) The Gospels...Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; the first books in the New Testament. In these books you will get to know Christ and learn to be like Him!

3) Proverbs. You will find this book right in the middle of the Old Testament. This book gives you instructions for every day living.

4) The Acts (of the Apostles) is for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. This book will also increase your faith!

5) Romans...to get a grasp on God's GRACE

When you are ready to dig deeper you will need a Bible that has references. The references will lead you to other verses that apply. Some will give you the original text as it was written in Greek or Hebrew, which is very important for clarity. You should find a "reference guide key" at the front of the Bible.

Now, go friend and study His precious Word!

Be Blessed!
