Halloween Part 1

I don't mind telling you that I have lost friends, and even church members, due to my stand on this topic. It is not my desire to offend anyone. However, I will not stand before people. I will stand before God. I would rather offend people than grieve the Holy Spirit and risk my own soul, as well as the souls of those under my influence, out of fear of speaking the truth.

With halloween approaching, I feel compelled of the Holy Spirit to address the question I am asked, and sometimes challenged with, every year.

Why do I firmly believe, and teach, that The Church and born-again believers should have NOTHING to do with halloween? And anything that even hints at the occult?

As a child, my family along with the churches we attended, thought nothing of participating. Churches set up haunted houses, we dressed up as ghosts and witches, etc. and were "all in".

I remember, like it was yesterday, when my eyes were opened. I was a freshman at Bible college. My friend and I went to the annual Jaycee's Haunted House. As we exited, we had to shake hands with "the devil" to get out the door. As I put my hand in the hand of a person imitating the enemy of my Lord, the prince of darkness, the would-be destroyer of my soul...a cold chill went through me. Immediately the Holy Spirit ask, "What are you doing?"

I'd like to say I quit all things halloween right on the spot but sadly it did take a few years for me to become spiritually bold enough to say "no" to co-workers, classmates and even fellow believers.

Too many excuse participating by saying "it's just pretend and all in fun". So professed followers of Christ go about imitating witches, ghosts, maniac serial killers and even Satan himself...the very darkness that opposes our Lord...all in the name of "pretend fun".

When I was in college, I experienced night terrors...the kind that literally paralyze you with fear. I had a real fear of Satan. I sought the counsel of a mentor which led to me doing my own research into the origins of halloween. I encourage you, my friends, to do the same.

We must then address the question, as followers of Christ, do we truly believe that it is o.k. to participate in a holiday which celebrates all things dark? Whether or not we ourselves are wearing costumes and decorating in the occultic genre, should we even be supporting a holiday that celebrates the occult? Could participating even be "denying our Lord"? In order to "put on" the things of darkness do we not have to first "put off" Christ?

Every year, at this time, I cannot help but think about how the heart of Christ must be breaking. His followers, His beloved, the ones who say they have "surrendered all to Him" are so quick to embrace a holiday designed to glorify the works of His arch enemy.

EPHESIANS 5 "For you were once darkness but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of the light...and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness; but rather, expose them".

1st THESSALONIANS 5:22 "Abstain from the very appearance of evil".

JOSHUA 24 "... choose you this day...as for me and my house we will serve the Lord"!!!

Open the eyes of our hearts, Lord!

By His Grace and For His Glory,

Pastor Jennifer
