Holy Real

Image
Recently the comment was made to me, about a certain Christian speaker, "I like her...she's real". This particular speaker posts pictures of her bikini clad self and pictures with her cleavage showing. She also shared a filthy joke on face book. Now, before some of you jump on here accusing me of judging, that is not the case at all. I am simply using her behavior as an example. Another example would be a well-known television preacher/teacher who recently read an unclean saying during his message in an attempt to be humorously "real". What we used to call "unholy" we now call "real". Being "real" or "down-to-earth" should never mean compromising a holy lifestyle. Jesus showed that He was "real" when, with great compassion, He reached down and picked the adulteress up out of the dirt and said, "I don't condemn you". However, He made it quite clear that her unholy lifestyle was not acceptab...

Fog

Image
I am one of those weird people who like fog. There are several reasons for my fascination with fog. For many people, fog brings them sadness. With my tendancy towards melancholy one would think it does me. However, that is not so. Fog brings me peace. A good fog always takes me back to our 20 years of living in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. Many a morning we awoke to the pasture land surrounding our farmhouse blanketed in a thick fog. Those were the days I could so poinantly feel the Presence of the Holy Spirit. Fog brings me hope. The best fogs come in the spring. So a good fog can mean that warmer days are on the way! Fog beckons me. It calls my heart to Scotland...a place I've never been but a place where a part of my heart will always be! Fog is mysterious. This is the thing I like most about fog. In my over-active imagination there are whole worlds just on the other side of the fog. Just walk into the mist and I'm there! Silly, I know; but still a daydream...

Is Speeding a Sin?

Image
Why is driving over the speed limit a sin? Deliberately driving over the speed limit, not stopping at signs, passing on a solid yellow line, aggressive driving, etc. is sin. Plain and simple. There's no getting around it. God gave us a command, not a suggestion, to obey the laws of the land. This command was reiterated by Paul in Romans 13:1,2. The only time God does not require us to obey civil law is when said law runs contrary to our faith and our stand for Christ. However, the real issue is a heart issue. Breaking traffic laws exhibits impatience and self-centeredness. Ouch! Let's go deeper. Breaking traffic laws is a sin of rebellion. When you deliberately drive over the speed limit, etc. you are saying, "I know the law...I just don't care. I'm going to do it anyway." What does God have to say about rebellion? He likens it in seriousness to witchcraft! "Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft..." 1 Samuel 15:23. That is pretty serious b...
