David didn't kill Goliath on the battlefield. He killed him long before he encountered him. He killed him in the sheep pasture as he spent time alone with God - praying, listening to the voice of the Father and worshipping!
It was because he had intentionally developed his relationship with God that he had the confidence to step onto that battlefield saying, "You come to me with spear and sword, but I come to you in THE NAME OF THE LORD!"
Asking a complete stranger for help is called "begging". Wouldn't we all rather get help from a trusted friend? God, in His great mercy, sometimes responds to begging. But the old adage "beggars will be beggars" is true. Without a complete lifestyle change beggars just go back to begging.
David didn't have to beg God for help. In fact, he didn't even have to take the time to fast and pray before he stepped onto that field! Chapter 17 of 1st Samuel records the story. There is no mention of David even stopping to say a quick prayer. He was ALREADY FULLY PREPARED!
The scripture tells us that even after David had been brought to live in Saul's palace that he sometimes returned to help his father care for the sheep. Promotion always brings on more attacks of the enemy. David's life in Saul's palace was anything but easy. He needed these times of "coming away". Don't forget to return to the pasture after you slay your giant! Satan always shows up after a great victory!
Do your time in the sheep pasture! Spend time in prayer, fasting, studying the Word and worship. Make it a daily part of your life. You can't wait until you face Goliath to get ready. You don't know when you will face him. Giants tend to come unexpected; just out of the blue! David had no idea he would be facing Goliath. He was simply on a mission - taking lunch to his brothers - being obedient to his father. But he was READY!
